Termoli was founded on a promontory, where first a maritime village developed surrounded by defensive walls and delimited by a majestic cliff overhanging the Adriatic Sea. Suggestive are the beaches of the town, with white sand and crystal clear water.
The ancient village is characterized by a maze of alleys, among which the most peculiar one is the “rejecélle”, one of the narrowest alleys of the world, that can be walked through sideways.
Overlooking on the ancient Norman centre is the Suevian Castle built by King Federico of Suevia II in the XIII century. Over the years the structure underwent a series of alterations, until reaching the final aspect of a tower with a square-based pyramidal trunk and four smaller cylindrical towers on each corner.
In the Duomo square it is possible to admire the Romanesque-Apulian cathedral, where, inside, the corpses of the patron saints of the town, Basso and Timoteo, are well preserved. Internally the church is divided in 3 naves and exteriorly it is characterized by 7 arches decorated by low reliefs.
The Belvedere tower, adorned with an arch door, is located at the other entrance of the ancient village, near the harbour, and it represents one of the eight sighting towers of the coast, from which you can enjoy a wonderful panorama.
At the base of the Suevian castle lies a beachfront promenade, that runs along the walls of the ancient town and is the anchor point for the Trabucco, an old wooden construction on the sea, used as a fishing machine and still working nowadays.
Along the south coast of Termoli is present a monument that symbolizes the intersection between the 42nd North parallel and the 15th Est meridian, which determines the center-western European timezone, that is indeed called “Termoli’s timezone”.
One of the must-see for the summer is the festival held in honour of Saint Basso, with the evocative marine procession on the fishing boats on the morning of the 3rd of August and the blessing of the town and the fishing by the bishop. The celebrations keep on going on also the next day, the 4th of August, with a procession along the alleys of the ancient village and the evening firework show at the harbour.
On the night of the 15th of August the town lights up with the “Castle fire”, a breathtaking firework show that takes place in the ancient village and on the sea and represents the historical reenactment of the Ottoman assault of the town happened in 1566. Every year thousands of citizens and tourists enjoy the show from the nearby beaches.
