We are in the area of "Santella," one of the oldest neighborhoods in Caserta, named after the nearby church dedicated to Saint Helena.
In the early 19th century, the Costa sisters, Maria and Rosa, lived in the palace on Via Salomone, which now houses our apartments. In that house, they kept in a large box what would become a landmark for the people of Caserta: the miraculous image of Saint Anne.
The sisters, affectionately called "Devote," were unmarried by choice and fervent in their Christian faith. Over the years, they took care of several generations of Caserta's children and young people, contributing to their growth and education.
After the sisters' deaths (1836 and 1838), the statue of Saint Anne was transferred to the nearby church of Saint Helena and then, in 1846, as stated in the sisters' will, it was placed in the church of the Archconfraternity of Santa Maria di Loreto and Souls in Purgatory, now known as the Diocesan Sanctuary of Saint Anne.
Since 1899, with the authorization of Bishop Gennaro Cosenza, the popular festival in honor of the "old lady," the great Saint, has been celebrated annually. The statue, carried in procession through the city with the devoted support of the Accollatori, visits every year the votive niche on Via Salomone and that house which is still called the "house of Saint Anne."
