Welcome to Tiggiano, a charming village located in the beautiful region of Puglia, in the heart of Salento. Tiggiano is a hidden treasure that enchants visitors with its rich history, fascinating architecture, and authentic Puglian atmosphere. It is a place where antiquity and tradition blend in perfect harmony, offering a unique experience to anyone who visits.
The history of Tiggiano dates back to ancient times. The origin of the village's name seems to be linked to the presence of ancient Roman tiles that were used to build the city. Over the centuries, Tiggiano has been dominated by different civilizations, including the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, and Normans. This rich past is still reflected today in the architecture and traditions of the village.
One of the main attractions of Tiggiano is the Mother Church of San Michele Arcangelo. This religious building, dating back to the 17th century, is an extraordinary example of Puglian Baroque architecture, with its majestic façade and internal works of art. Other places of interest include the Chapel of San Rocco, the Church of San Pietro, and the Chapel of Santa Maria della Mercede, each of which preserves artistic and historical treasures.
Not only is Tiggiano a cultural gem, but it is also surrounded by unspoiled nature. The surrounding countryside is characterized by centuries-old olive groves and typical dry stone walls of the region. It is possible to take panoramic walks among the olive trees and enjoy breathtaking views of the Puglian countryside. Furthermore, not far from Tiggiano, is the splendid coast of Salento, with its cliffs overlooking the crystal-clear sea. The nearest beaches, such as Marina di Novaglie and Marina di Tricase, also offer opportunities to relax and swim.
Tiggiano is a lively community that celebrates its traditions with events and festivals throughout the year. One of the most significant events is the festival of San Michele Arcangelo, the patron saint of the village, which takes place in September. During this festival, the streets of Tiggiano are filled with colors, music, and folklore, with religious processions, shows, and fireworks. It is an ideal opportunity to immerse oneself in the culture and hospitality of the place.
Tiggiano also offers an extraordinary culinary experience that will delight your senses. Local cuisine is based on fresh and genuine ingredients, often sourced from the land itself. One of the traditional dishes to taste is "Pittule", delicious leavened pasta fritters, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. They are often served with local olives and fresh cheeses such as ricotta.
The gastronomy of Tiggiano is also known for its fish-based dishes. Salento is surrounded by the sea, and here you can taste delicacies such as "Cicireddhu", a fish soup made with red mullet, or "Polpo alla pignata", a dish of octopus cooked in a terracotta pot.
Don't forget to taste the local wines, such as Negroamaro and Primitivo, which are renowned throughout the region. Accompany everything with the famous Puglian bread, such as "frisella" or "puccia", perfect for accompanying the intense flavors of local dishes.
Tiggiano is also committed to sustainable tourism and the enhancement of its natural heritage. Local authorities and inhabitants are adopting initiatives aimed at preserving the environment, promoting responsible and sustainable tourism. There are also opportunities for visitors to participate in eco-friendly activities, such as hiking or cycling to explore the surrounding nature.
