Domus Antiqua B&B

Bed & Breakfast in Spello in the hills

Domus Antiqua is located on the slopes of Mount Subasio, along the legendary Olive Tree Road that connects Spello and Assisi. Enclosed by 5,000 square meters of terraced parkland, this house embodies two thousand years of history: it has evolved from an ancient Etrusco-Roman rural temple to a Lombard building, then to a small medieval convent, and finally to a farmhouse, culminating in a restoration in the 1970s that revived its original charm. While strolling through the garden, visitors can still admire the ancient basins used for ritual washings, a vivid reminder of its sacred and rural past. The three independent rooms, each overlooking the upper walkway of the garden, are tastefully furnished and equipped with all modern amenities: air conditioning, Wi-Fi, a TV, a minibar, and a private bathroom with a shower and hairdryer. From spring to autumn, the outdoor relaxation area featuring a hot tub and sun loungers provides guests with moments of pure wellness and tranquility, immersed in nature and the silence of the Umbrian hills. Domus Antiqua is the perfect place for those seeking a stay filled with relaxation, nature, and authentic experiences. A variety of activities are available upon reservation, including horseback riding, bike or Vespa tours, guided visits to Assisi and Spello (even via a tuk-tuk), tastings at local wineries and olive mills, wine tours, and cooking masterclasses with a Michelin-starred chef. Adventure enthusiasts can try quad biking or paragliding over Assisi. Situated along the St. Francis Path, the property offers direct access to the trails connecting Spello and Assisi, one of the most scenic stretches of the route. After a day exploring towns and nature, returning to Domus becomes a pleasurable experience, accompanied by soft music and a sunset aperitif. Here, the tradition of hospitality is a family story. It all began with Grandpa Amleto, a pioneer in the hotel industry in the 1950s, and has been passionately carried on by Dad Curzio, now rejuvenated by Cassandra, who, along with her family, has chosen Umbria to continue this legacy. It is a place that welcomes guests warmly and leaves an indelible memory with its comfort, elegance, and the timeless magic of Mount Subasio.

You will be hosted by Cassandra

Cassandra welcomes you with the warmth of someone who views hospitality as a cherished family tradition. She is the third generation to uphold a legacy that began with her grandfather Amleto, one of the pioneers in establishing hotels and restaurants in the Bassa Reggiana during the 1950s, and continued by her father Curzio, who passionately and creatively preserved its essence. Today, Cassandra and her family have chosen Umbria, her mother Rossana's homeland, to breathe new life into this calling. At Domus Antiqua, they have combined their experience and love for beauty, creating a space where every detail tells a story and each guest feels like a friend. With warmth and discretion, Cassandra is always there to offer advice, make reservations, and suggest the most authentic local experiences, turning every stay into a memorable occasion.

Area hills

The Domus Antiqua is situated in a prime location on the slopes of Mount Subasio, along the famous Olive Tree Road that links two of the most charming villages in Umbria: Spello and Assisi. This stretch, an integral part of the Way of Saint Francis, traverses a landscape of rare beauty, where the green of the olive groves blends with the changing colors of the fields and the harmonious outlines of the Umbrian hills. Assisi, visible from the garden of the property, is one of the most visited spiritual and cultural destinations in Italy. The birthplace of Saint Francis and Saint Clare, it boasts an extraordinary artistic and architectural heritage: the Basilica of Saint Francis with Giotto's frescoes, the Temple of Minerva in the Town Square, the Rocca Maggiore, and the picturesque cobbled streets that open up to breathtaking views. Just a few kilometers away, Spello is a delightful village enclosed by Roman walls and medieval towers. Its flower-filled streets, artisan shops, and remnants from the Roman era tell the story of a place where time seems to flow more slowly. The Infiorate in June is a must-see event that transforms the village's streets into carpets of colorful petals. The location of the Domus also allows for easy access to other iconic sites in Umbria: Spoleto, Bevagna, Montefalco, and Perugia, along with numerous trails that wind through the Monte Subasio Park, perfect for hiking, biking, or horseback riding. For food lovers, the area offers an authentic culinary tradition characterized by simple and genuine flavors: high-quality extra virgin olive oil, fine wines like Sagrantino and Grechetto, local cured meats and cheeses, legumes, and ancient grains. Amidst nature, art, and spirituality, this part of Umbria provides a complete travel experience, where every step reconnects you with the land and yourself.
