Antica Locanda

Apartment in Montescheno in the city center

In the heart of Montescheno, centrally located and just a short walk from the forest, the Antica Locanda welcomes guests in an authentic and tranquil setting, surrounded by the natural beauty of the Antrona Valley. The establishment, an old village chalet with a centuries-old history, has been carefully restored to provide independent, warm, and functional spaces, perfect for families, couples, and small groups seeking relaxation, fresh air, and a slower pace, away from urban hustle. The location is ideal for both resting and exploring a surprisingly diverse landscape. Within an hour, one can reach the stunning Toce Falls, Lake Maggiore with Stresa and the Borromean Islands, Lake Mergozzo, the Alpe Veglia and Alpe Devero Natural Park, and the Premia Thermal Baths. Staying in the valley, within about thirty minutes by car, you can visit Lake Antrona and Lake dei Cavalli, popular destinations for hiking and alpine views. Just a hundred meters from the house, trails of varying difficulty begin, suitable for both children and more experienced hikers. Additionally, the Vigezzina railway departs from Domodossola, offering scenic connections to Locarno in Switzerland. The accommodations on the recently renovated upper floor consist of two independent units designed for a practical and comfortable stay. The Gatto apartment, approximately seventy square meters, can accommodate up to six people and features a double bedroom, a room with single beds and a pull-out bed, a fully equipped kitchen, and a living room with a television, board games, and a sofa bed. The bathroom includes a shower. The Volpe apartment, around forty square meters, accommodates up to three guests and offers a room with a French double bed, a spacious living room with a kitchenette, television, and a sofa bed, as well as a bathroom with a shower. Both options come with a furnished balcony featuring a table and seating, perfect for enjoying the views in peace. Amenities include WiFi, a washing machine, microwave, coffee maker, kettle, toaster, linens, and essential kitchen and personal care products, along with a hairdryer, sewing kit, and first aid kit. Safety measures include a fire extinguisher and carbon monoxide, smoke, and gas detectors. A crib with linens is available upon request, and there are toys for younger guests. From April to September, guests can also enjoy an outdoor space equipped with a barbecue, table, benches, umbrella, and sun loungers. One pet is allowed per apartment. The owner, a knowledgeable guide to the mountains and local trails, is happy to offer personalized suggestions for hikes and activities, along with a small gift related to the local tradition of herbs and liqueurs. Although she may not always be present during the week, she remains an attentive and available point of contact, with a trusted person on-site for any needs. The Antica Locanda is located in the village, just beyond the bell tower, in a sunny area even during winter months, a rare characteristic in an alpine environment.

You will be hosted by Sonia

Sonia is the heart and soul of the Antica Locanda, deeply connected to Montescheno and its valley, which she chose years ago as an escape from city life. Passionate about the mountains and well-versed in the local area, she enjoys sharing tips with guests on walks, hikes, and lesser-known spots, helping them experience the region in an authentic way. A lover of herbs and wild plants, she crafts small artisanal liqueurs that she offers as a warm welcome, a gesture that reflects her attention to detail and hospitality. By profession, she is a teacher and may not always be on-site during the week, but she remains readily available for any needs and has a trusted local representative. Her hospitality is discreet yet attentive, designed to make each guest feel cared for while also allowing them the freedom to enjoy their stay in complete peace.

Area city center

Montescheno is a small alpine village where time seems to pass more slowly, nestled in a sunny spot within the Antrona Valley, one of the most authentic valleys in Ossola. The ambiance here reflects that of traditional mountain towns, characterized by stone houses, silence punctuated only by the sounds of nature, and a pace of life that encourages slowing down to find balance and simplicity. The town's central location allows for easy exploration of the immediate surroundings on foot, while just a short distance away, forests and trails weave through larch trees, pastures, and breathtaking viewpoints. The valley is a true paradise for those who enjoy walking and spending time outdoors. The trails range from easy walks suitable for children to more challenging routes for experienced hikers, leading through alpine pastures, small lakes, and stunning viewpoints. Within about half an hour's drive, you can reach Lake Antrona and Lake dei Cavalli, beautiful bodies of water nestled among the mountains, ideal for relaxing days immersed in nature and tranquility. The entire area offers ever-changing landscapes with the seasons, from the vibrant greens of summer to the warm hues of autumn, and the clear light of winter. Montescheno also serves as an excellent base for exploring a diverse region. In less than an hour, you can transition from alpine environments to large pre-alpine lakes, from protected natural areas to spa towns, blending nature, culture, and wellness. Nearby attractions include the spectacular Toce Waterfall, Lake Maggiore with its elegant villages and historic islands, the crystal-clear waters of Lake Mergozzo, and the Alpe Veglia and Alpe Devero Natural Park, a beloved destination for those seeking vast and unspoiled mountain landscapes. Thus, the area combines tranquility, nature, and diverse hiking and experience opportunities, making for a rich stay that remains far from mass tourism.
