The ancient Roman theater, also known as "dell'Anticaglia," dates back to the 1st century BC. With its typical semicircular shape, similar to Greek theaters, it could accommodate between 5,000 and 6,000 spectators and had three entrances: two for the actors and one for the audience. The building was constructed using the opus mixtum technique to withstand earthquakes: the reticulatum allowed for the dispersion of seismic waves, while the latericium blocked them.
In this theater, considered one of the wonders of Neapolis by Octavian Augustus, Emperor Claudius staged several comedies in honor of his beloved brother Germanicus. The theater was first renovated in the 1st century during the Flavian era, and later in the 2nd century. Forgotten during the medieval period, between the 15th and 17th centuries, it was damaged by Vico Cinquesanti. Today, two arches located on Via Anticaglia testify to the presence of Nero's ancient stage. These structures, perfectly integrated into the surrounding buildings, were used to reinforce the exterior part of the theater.
