Lecce is known as the "Lady of Baroque" and the Baroque art characterizes the spires, portals, churches, monuments, and dwellings of the historical center. Passing through PORTA NAPOLI, erected in 1548 in honor of Charles V, you enter the old city. Along with the Theater (in Arte della Cartapesta street), it is one of the most important witnesses of the Roman era. The Amphitheater was built in the 2nd century AD to entertain passionate spectators with shows and games (the building could accommodate about 20,000 people). Near Sant'Oronzo Square is the Castle commissioned by King Charles V in 1539. Sant'Oronzo Square is the main square of Lecce, the city's living room, always a meeting place. Shops, cafes, and offices populate this charming oval square, whose pavement is decorated with a mosaic depicting the city's emblem: a She-wolf under a holm oak tree and a crown with 5 towers. The Cathedral of Lecce stands in the homonymous square and represents the beating heart of the city's religious life.
