The Villa Torre degli Onesti, initially conceived as a military surveillance and defense structure, was built by the States of Lucca to watch over the valley road frequented by pilgrims of the Via Francigena. Its roots date back to a distant past, likely from the eighth century, during the appearance of the first parish churches along the valley shores. The name "Torre degli Onesti" appears in a cadastral document dated 1441, located on the hill overlooking San Martino in Freddana, known as the Castle.
With the arrival of peaceful periods towards the end of the fifteenth century, its military function gradually began to lose relevance. The tower and the surrounding lands were granted to local communities for agricultural and livestock purposes.
However, it was during the sixteenth century, thanks to the intervention of wealthy families from the city, that the site took on the appearance we know today. The first family to intervene on the tower's structures was the Tucci family, who acquired the entire plot of land and carefully organized it. The Tuccis planted vineyards and olive groves, developed pastures, managed the forests, and introduced a plantation of poplars. The tower itself was incorporated into the main building known as the "domus magna," around which a mill, an oil mill, a water system, and houses for agricultural workers were built.
In the seventeenth century, ownership of the Villa Torre degli Onesti passed from the Tucci family to the Mansi family, who were already owners of another villa in San Martino in Freddana. The Mansis were one of the most influential families in the city, and their members held prestigious roles such as ambassadors of Lucca to Genoa, Milan, Rome, and Madrid. During this period, the chapel was also erected.
In the course of the twentieth century, the villa underwent inheritance divisions and, in fact, was abandoned until its rediscovery. In 1990, restoration work was completed, restoring the Villa Torre degli Onesti to its ancient beauty.
