Rossano, also known as Rossano Calabro to distinguish it from Rossano Veneto, is an Italian municipality in the province of Cosenza, in Calabria. The city is also called Rossano Byzantine and Rossano, the city of the Codex, in homage to the Purple Codex, one of the oldest gospels in the world, preserved for centuries in Rossano (Diocesan and Codex Museum) and included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in the "Memory of the World" category.
In addition to the numerous noble palaces scattered throughout various private properties, in the historic center of Rossano it is possible to visit:
- The Diocesan and Codex Museum, home to the famous Rossanensis Purple Codex, an ancient Greek Gospel from the 6th century of Byzantine origin. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site on October 9, 2015. According to many, it is the most valuable illuminated Gospel in the world.
- The Cathedral of Maria Santissima Achiropita.
- The Church of San Nilo, commissioned by Princess Olimpia Aldobrandini of Rossano in the 15th century, in honor of the city that gave birth to Saint Nilus, founder of the Greek Abbey of Grottaferrata. He is venerated by Catholic and Orthodox churches.
- The Oratory of San Marco.
- The Church of San Bernardino, a late Gothic style building from the 15th century. It was the first Catholic church in the city and houses the tomb of Oliverio di Somma (1536) with a statue of the deceased and a wooden crucifix from the 17th century.
