Tempio Pausania (known as Tèmpiu in Gallurese) is a city of about 14,100 inhabitants located in northern Sardinia, in the heart of the historical region of Gallura, at the foot of Mount Limbara. As the capital (together with Olbia) of the Province of Olbia-Tempio, it is also the Episcopal See (Diocese of Tempio-Ampurias) and the seat of the Court. The administrative designation "Pausania" was added in the early 1900s to indicate Phausiana, the ancient name of Olbia, which was the first Episcopal See of Gallura. According to some, it was a medieval city built on the ruins of Roman Olbia or in its immediate vicinity (although currently there is no historical or archaeological evidence to support this). Tempio Pausania is home to a university (a branch of the University of Sassari that offers degree programs in Herbal Techniques and Environmental Toxicology), high schools, and a civil hospital. On August 31, 2006, with a Statutory Resolution of the Provincial Council, both Olbia (the legal seat of the institution, the Presidency, the Provincial Government, and the Provincial Council) and Tempio Pausania (the shared seat of the Presidency and the Provincial Council) were designated as capitals of the Province of Olbia-Tempio. As an important administrative center, Tempio Pausania hosts civil and criminal courts (with jurisdiction over the entire province), financial offices (local branch of the Revenue Agency and Land Registry), and social security offices (INPS). It is also the seat of the Province, regional offices with provincial competence (Heritage and Cultural Assets Service of Tempio-Olbia, provincial headquarters of ERSAT, provincial office of the Forestry Agency of Sardinia), regional forest inspectorate, Gallura Mountain Community, Anglona-Gallura library system, Bar Association, Experimental Cork Station, a football stadium (approved for Serie B matches), and the Episcopal See (Diocese of Tempio-Ampurias).
