Tempio Pausania (known as Tèmpiu in Gallurese) is a city of about 14,100 inhabitants located in northern Sardinia, in the heart of the historical region of Gallura, at the foot of Mount Limbara. As the capital (along with Olbia) of the Province of Olbia-Tempio, it is also the Episcopal Seat (Diocese of Tempio-Ampurias) and the seat of the Court.
The administrative name "Pausania" was added in the early 1900s to indicate Phausiana, the ancient name of Olbia, which was the first Episcopal Seat of Gallura. According to some, it was a medieval city built on the ruins of Roman Olbia or in its immediate vicinity (although currently there is no historical or archaeological evidence to support this).
Tempio Pausania is home to a university (a branch of the University of Sassari offering degree courses in Herbal Techniques and Environmental Toxicology), high schools, and a civil hospital.
On August 31, 2006, with a Statutory Resolution of the Provincial Council, both Olbia (the legal headquarters of the institution, the Presidency, the Provincial Government, and the Provincial Council) and Tempio Pausania (shared seat of the Presidency and the Provincial Council) were designated as the capitals of the Province of Olbia-Tempio.
As an important administrative center, Tempio Pausania houses civil and criminal courts (with jurisdiction over the entire province), financial offices (local branch of the Revenue Agency and Cadastre), and social security offices (INPS). It is also the seat of the Province, regional offices with provincial jurisdiction (Heritage and Cultural Assets Service of Tempio-Olbia, provincial headquarters of ERSAT, provincial office of the Forestry Agency of Sardinia), the regional forestry inspectorate, the Gallura Mountain Community, the Anglona-Gallura library system, the Bar Association, the Experimental Cork Station, a football stadium (approved for Serie B matches), and the Episcopal Seat (Diocese of Tempio-Ampurias).
