The Francesco Grassi Palace, built around 1864, is located in the heart of Aradeo, surrounded by residential structures. The built surfaces cover 800 square meters on the first floor, 750 square meters on the ground floor, and a 700 square meter garden. The façade of the palace overlooks Via Palmiro Togliatti, adorned with a series of windows and a rustic portal.
The back façade overlooks an uncultivated area, surrounded by high fences in the front, with decorated columns crowned by carved pinnacles.
A second gate closes the back part of the palace, with an ancient floor and the atrium connected to the garden's Serliana.
The ten rooms on the noble floor are furnished with paintings and floors dating back to 1893, confirmed by the date on the decorated vaults by Agesilao Flora and his assistants. The mosaic floors displaying the family crest, the boiserie and faux marble plinths, the stucco frames on the salon walls, and the overdoors with decorative stucco figures complete the interior decorations, giving the space a pronounced Liberty style.
The paintings on the vaults are dated 1893 and 1897.
At the entrance, the technique used is oil on dry plaster, already employed by Flora during his apprenticeship in Rome, where he worked alongside Maccari in the decoration of the Senate's yellow hall in Rome, and in the Salento region, where the painter imported the acquired techniques.
The rooms are designed according to the intended use of each individual space and the purpose of the room.
The entrance vault is painted with female subjects, most likely family members. Some female figures are depicted in monochrome, referring to the recent technique of photography, while others are portrayed within star-shaped vaults.
The Salon, overlooking the garden, is decorated with a mythological subject depicting Galatea and Aci in the center of the vault, and along the perimeter, there are panels depicting famous love stories such as Romeo and Juliet on the balcony. The walls are adorned with stucco panels framed by delicate cornices surmounted by medallions.
The dining room is decorated with a beautiful frieze with garlands and vegetal motifs related to the seasons of the year it represents, with a central scene of a bacchanal. The floor is composed of a charming mosaic with vegetal motifs.
The living room is furnished with a beautiful mosaic depicting the family crest, and the vault is decorated with cherubs holding musical instruments, monograms, and the Grassi family crest (a rampant lion). The room is called the Yellow Room.
The bedroom has a vault painted with refined grotesque decorations, and the image of charity is framed in the band above the bed. The ceiling is adorned with angelic figures holding veils. The walls are decorated with boiserie and Pompeian-style color shades. The repertoire of grotesque decorations is very rich and demonstrates a study of a subject linked to Rome and developed through the observation of Raphael's works.
The vault of the individual room depicts Cupid and Psyche.
The Japanese Room features damask motifs and fans; the perimeter frame in trompe-l'oeil depicts bamboo canes.
