This marvelous ancient dwelling has always belonged to my family, who have preserved and maintained it intact over the centuries, since the distant year of 1620, when the earliest traces of its history were discovered. Throughout the past five generations, the house has been passed down from mother to daughter; one of the most famous owners was Countess Camilla Caterina Melli, who, in 1818, secretly married Vincenzo Grassi, a member of a non-noble family from Viano, despite the obstacles posed by her parents and the Church. In the face of this act, the Bishop of Reggio Emilia blessed their marriage, from which my ancestors Matilde, Elvira, my grandmother Emilia, who had two daughters, my mother Annamaria and my aunt Lisetta, were born.
Since 2015, I have continued this precious tradition as the current owner, and I have embarked on a long and meticulous scientific restoration project to bring the buildings of the village back to their original splendor.
I have decided to open the doors of my dwelling to adventurous travelers eager to discover an enchanting place, rich in history and traditions, where they can immerse themselves completely, find serenity, and feel a part of this wonder.
Elena.
The picturesque village, formerly known as "CÃ de Grassi in San Polo", takes its name from an ancient oratory dedicated to San Pauli, on the ruins of which the current Town Hall was built.
This area of the gentle hill preserves a precious architectural heritage, with monumental buildings that blend perfectly with the natural forms of the landscape, creating a homogeneous environment of exceptional historical and environmental value.
The San Polo village includes a noble residence and two late medieval towers. The most significant tower overlooks a small street that leads to the castle of Viano and is characterized by a dovecote. A raised niche contains a precious fresco depicting the Madonna with Child and Saint Anthony with the weapon of the patron. The second tower, with its massive structure, presents similar characteristics.
Large rural buildings from the 18th century, which once housed the farmers and their agricultural spaces such as the stable, the barn, and the oven/laundry, surround the historic houses. Ancient cobblestone paths allow you to discover every corner of the village. The greenery envelops everything with its surrounding meadows and groves.
