The medieval hill village of Aieta, located only 10 km from the sea at an altitude of 520 meters, is home to approximately 800 inhabitants. It can be reached from Praia a Mare via a scenic road that offers a view of the Gulf of Policastro. The village, untouched by modern changes, is a pleasant surprise for those unfamiliar with Calabria. The region offers unique natural beauty, such as rocky coasts and beaches overlooking the Mediterranean, alongside majestic mountains like Monte Pollino, which reaches over 2000 meters.
Aieta is situated like a panoramic terrace between the Gulf of Policastro and the mountains of the Calabrian Apennines. It has an ancient history, inhabited since prehistoric times and subsequently colonized by Greek-Minoan populations, as indicated by its name "Aieta," which derives from the Greek word "aetos" (eagle, a bird that nests on rocks). The current urban center dates back to the Middle Ages. Due to Saracen pirate raids in the 11th century, the inhabitants of Blanda took refuge in more defensible places, giving rise to Tortora and Aieta, with districts such as Julitta and Cantogrande.
Aieta has witnessed the presence of various feudal lords throughout its history, such as the Lauria, Martirano, and Cosentino families. However, the citizens of Aieta have also sought to rebel against this oppression. In 1563, led by Silvio Curatolo, they attempted to free themselves from feudal constraints, but the attempt failed. To escape the reprisals of Baron Tommaso Martirano, Curatolo took refuge on one of his properties, which later took the name of the entire district.
The historical evidence of Aieta mainly dates back to the late Middle Ages and the subsequent period. The Church of Santa Maria della Visitazione, from the 16th century, has been renovated several times and features valuable frescoes and paintings, as well as a newly restored pipe organ. The 16th-century palace, with a facade designed by Tuscan architects, is also considered a rare example of the Renaissance in Southern Italy. A loggia overlooking the Gulf of Policastro completes the picture of this fascinating village.
