The first of the Cinque Terre, Riomaggiore, is an ancient village from the 12th century that gets its name from one of the two streams that run through it: "Rivus Maior". The village is made up of small houses, close together, descending from the hillside to the sea. The tourist walks along narrow and steep paths and suddenly the sea and the boats appear in front of him.
Wherever you are, you will be amazed by the vastness of the panoramas. From the center of Riomaggiore, the famous "Via dell'amore" trail starts, which takes you to Manarola and the other locations. You can also take the botanical path of "Torre Guardiola", breathing in the scents of the Mediterranean scrub, all the way to the top of Montenero. From here, your view spans from the promontory of Mesco to Portovenere.
You can sunbathe on the beautiful Fossola beach or have fun with water sports. Due to the terrain's conformation, we recommend not using a car.
You can reach the other villages with the local train, which runs very frequently throughout the day. Electric buses are available for transportation within the town.
Another way to discover the Cinque Terre coast is to take boat excursions, which connect the villages from Levanto to Portovenere and La Spezia.
