Alberobello, a municipality in the province of Bari, is renowned for its unique dwellings called trulli. The history of this captivating trulli city dates back to the second half of the 16th century, when the counts of Conversano, the local feudal lords, granted permission to the peasants to construct a new village with dry-stone houses, without the use of mortar. This way, they could easily demolish them in case of royal inspections (as the feudal lords had to pay tribute to the king for the construction of new settlements). The most characteristic neighborhoods in the heart of Alberobello are the Rione Monti and the Rione Aia Piccola, both national monuments and recognized as UNESCO World Heritage sites since December 1996. In these neighborhoods, all the buildings have the typical trullo structure and are used as homes, shops, bars, and restaurants. Each trullo typically consists of a central square room that connects through arches to the kitchen and other rooms. Many of the trulli can be visited. In the Rione Monti alone, which covers an area of 15 hectares, you can find over a thousand trulli.
