On the sweet hill of olive trees overlooking the splendid city of Lucca stands the majestic church of Sant'Andrea, an ancient Romanesque building constructed around the 13th century along the historic Via Francigena, the pilgrimage route that led the faithful from Canterbury to Rome and represented one of the most important communication routes in medieval Europe.
From historical documents, it emerges that the church was built near a pre-existing stone watchtower, originally used as an observation and signaling tower.
Later on, the watchtower was connected to the new religious building dedicated to Sant'Andrea and, after some slight modifications, became the bell tower.
Over the following centuries, a third stone building was added to the bell tower and the Romanesque church. This building served as a convent for the friars and as accommodation for pilgrims along the Via Francigena.
In 1897, the ancient Pieve di Sant'Andrea was deconsecrated and deprived of its sacred objects, which were transferred to the new Church of Maggiano, built between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, at the foot of the hill.
Since 1997, the complex of Pieve di Sant'Andrea has been part of our family, who, after careful and attentive restoration work, has brought to light the ancient beauties of this timeless place, rich in unique and fascinating charm.
