A Locanda Tù Marchese

Inn in Matino in the city center

"A Locanda Tù Marchese" (The Inn of the Marquis), a historic dwelling, was renovated in 2005 by our Protopapa family. We made the decision to acquire this ancient noble palace located on Via Giovan Battista Del Tufo, in the picturesque medieval village of Matino, in the central hinterland between the enchanting Adriatic and Ionian coasts. In the palace rooms, we have preserved the original geometries, restored the floors, the star-shaped vaults, and the fascinating colors of the past era, enriching them with four-star hotel services. Our trattoria, on the other hand, offers visitors typical recipes from the Salento tradition, prepared with locally sourced ingredients from our own production. We offer six rooms and an underground whirlpool tub with a massage room and an aperitif service. Freshness, silence, and relaxation for our guests, welcome to our home, welcome to our Inn. Among the scents of aromatic herbs, freshly baked bread, and pastries in the entrance courtyard, we present to you an extraordinary palace, where you can savor the slow passing of time and our deeply rooted traditions. Creating unique moments becomes an absolute priority in a family and authentic environment. We present all of this not only as nostalgia, but rather as reflection. To avoid trivializing our traditions and our way of daily living, we must remember the bond that our grandparents feel with the land, a bond that is fading over the years, just as the memory of a deep act of rebellion and defense of one's own land, like that of the Brigands, is being lost.

Our breakfast

Breakfast is the main moment when guests immerse themselves in scents and traditions. During winter, breakfast is served in the ancient underground olive mill, while in summer it is offered on the terrace from 8 to 11. The skilled hands of my mother, Luisa, prepare everything that is offered in the rich breakfast buffet, in which Salento pastries play a leading role. Among the many sweet delights served, the Pasticciotto is definitely a must. It should be enjoyed hot. The Pasticciotto is a sweet pastry with ancient origins, which traditionally contains a custard cream, although there are numerous variations. The Fruttone, a Salento sweet made of shortcrust pastry, is filled with jam and almond paste, and covered in chocolate. On the breakfast table at "A Locanda tù Marchese," guests will also find Mustazzoli, almond biscuits with chocolate icing, and rustic Pastarelle, breakfast cookies that Salento mothers used to prepare to accompany cups of milk. Fresh and syrupy fruit, hot beverages, fruit juices and freshly squeezed juices, rusks, butter, cereals, homemade jams, honey, yogurt, but also bread, eggs, cheese, and cold cuts complete the rich breakfast buffet for our guests.

Restaurant

"The Marchese's Inn" (A Locanda Tù Marchese) is a trattoria and grill in Salento, in the city of Matino in the province of Lecce. Here, the true protagonist is the traditional rustic and homestyle cuisine of Puglia and Salento, prepared and served with love and respect for old rituals and cooking methods. It is a way to introduce you to Salento, a way to rediscover those scents and flavors that remind us of our history and roots. Furthermore, the grill area offers a variety of local and non-local cuts of meat, aged in a meat maturation machine called Dry Ager, and seasoned with spices, sauces, and side dishes. At A Locanda Tù Marchese, a typical trattoria in Salento, guests, whether they are staying in our B&B in Matino or other visitors, will find dishes from traditional Puglian and Salentine gastronomy, based on the principles of the Mediterranean Diet. Since 2010, this combination of simple dishes, common to Mediterranean populations, has been recognized and protected by UNESCO as "Intangible Cultural Heritage". The special blend of legumes, cereals, vegetables, meat, and fish creates a mix of flavors and aromas that perfectly represent our region. Our collaboration with Coldiretti farmers and breeders within the Campagna Amica project is an additional guarantee of the seasonality and authenticity of the ingredients, essential elements of the Mediterranean Diet. Who better than Nonna Tetta, together with Chef Daniele and his skilled hands, can take care of these exceptional ingredients? Their professionalism and ancient knowledge, passed down from generation to generation, offer traditional recipes that allow you to savor the Salento of the past, characterized by anticipation, care, and study of local raw materials.

Together, my father Daniele, my mother Luisa, my sister Michela, and my beloved Nonna Tetta take care of our historic dwelling with cozy rooms and a typical trattoria. My father is a professional chef, who has traveled throughout Italy and decided to bring the Salento culinary tradition to our trattoria, blending it with the Messapian heritage and, above all, with the unique specialties of Matino. We like to make our guests feel like part of the family, so that they can not only taste but also feel in their hearts the flavor of our traditional dishes like "Ciciri e Tria," which I prepare together with Nonna Tetta and my dad.

Area city center

Our structure is a typical farmhouse, but located in the heart of the historic center of Matino, a charming village in southern Salento. We are only 50 km from Lecce, 18 km from Gallipoli, 43 km from Otranto, and 32 km from Santa Maria di Leuca. Our address is Via Del Tufo, 38. You can reach the historic center of Matino by car and arrive directly at the large gate of our structure to conveniently unload your luggage. For parking, we always offer useful advice to our guests as our structure does not have a dedicated area. If you arrive by car, the nearest free parking is located in Piazza San Giorgio, where the Church of San Giorgio is situated (it is not recommended to park there during celebrations). An excellent alternative is to park in via Luzzatti, a wide and free area. Both options are just a few meters away from our structure. If you arrive before the scheduled time, by contacting us, you can participate in our experiences and walks in the village.
