Mesagne, a charming small town in the province of Brindisi, is known as "the gateway to the East". With a population of about 27,000 inhabitants, it is located in the picturesque plain of Salento, right in the heart of Puglia.
As you enter the ancient village, enclosed within a heart-shaped artery, you will feel like taking a step back in time, surrounded by the atmosphere of past centuries. The historic center of Mesagne is truly fascinating, showcasing a unique artistic beauty. Its panoramic labyrinth of narrow streets is perfectly organized, with whitewashed houses contrasting against the intense blue sky, creating a captivating play of shadows and colors. This ancient village dates back to the pre-Roman era when it was inhabited by the Messapians. Numerous traces of this ancient civilization can be admired in the Museum of the Territory, the Hellenistic Necropolis, and the archaeological park of the historic center. Mesagne is also renowned for its dominant Baroque art, which harmoniously interacts with the surrounding squares, considered the center of life, creating a spatial and theatrical architectural composition. In fact, during the summer, these squares host numerous festivals, celebrations, theatrical performances, and the famous dance of "pizzica". These cultural events truly characterize Mesagne and make it a special place.
The imposing Norman-Swabian Castle is the most representative monument in the city. Completely restored, it also serves as a museum of Renaissance architecture and hosts numerous modern and contemporary exhibitions. Inside, the Ugo Granafei Archaeological Museum displays a rich collection of archaeological artifacts, including amphorae, various pottery, tools, engravings, paintings, jewelry, and other objects belonging to the Messapian people and other ancient civilizations. Notable is an important Roman mosaic from the thermal baths located in the countryside of Masseria Malvindi.
