Il Sanco

Apartment in San Bortolo-Selva di Progno in the hills

Our property

Il Sanco is a vacation home located in the serene environment of eastern Lessinia, approximately an hour away from Verona. It is set amidst a natural landscape rich in forests, valleys, and ancient hamlets. The property is situated in the hamlet of Sanco, near San Bartolomeo delle Montagne, within the municipality of Selva di Progno, at an altitude of 940 meters. This small settlement maintains a strong connection to the area's history and traditions and is now an ideal place for those seeking a peaceful getaway, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The building housing the vacation home is part of an old residential complex that has been largely restored through meticulous historical and artistic conservation efforts using eco-sustainable materials and techniques. The oldest part of the hamlet dates back to the 17th century and includes the ancient stable with the traditional Lessinia hayloft above it. A 17th-century votive tablet depicting the Madonna with Child, Saint Roch, and Saint Sebastian can still be seen on the exterior, showcasing the local devotion and history of the place. The portion of the building designated for guest accommodation was expanded between the late 19th century and the early 20th century to meet the needs of the families living in the hamlet. The house features three cozy and quiet non-smoking rooms, each equipped with a private bathroom with a shower and hairdryer. On the ground floor, there is the “Anemone” room, facing south, and the “Genziana” room, facing north. On the first floor, there is a configuration consisting of two interconnecting rooms, “Peonia” and “Elleboro,” ideal for families or small groups of up to four people. The rooms are simply and thoughtfully furnished, featuring a double bed or two single beds, a desk, a chair, and a coat rack, and are provided with linens, blankets, and pillows. All spaces are bright and offer free Wi-Fi. Guests have access to a shared kitchen where they can have breakfast or prepare their own meals. The kitchen is equipped with dishes and utensils, a coffee machine, a moka pot, a microwave, a two-burner induction stove, a refrigerator, and a large wooden table that seats five or six. The use of the kitchen is complimentary and includes a selection of organic coffee and herbal teas offered by the house. With prior notice, a hearty breakfast made from local and primarily organic products can be prepared upon request. In the attic, there is a pleasant reading and relaxation room characterized by a large window overlooking the forest, a space designed for quiet moments, music, or reading, which can also be shared with other guests. Outside, the ground-floor porch provides an ideal setting for resting or enjoying meals while taking in the tranquility of the surrounding nature. A spacious green area surrounds the house, inviting relaxation and direct contact with the mountainous landscape. The property also offers a washing machine with detergent and fabric softener, available for a fee per wash. Children up to two years old stay for free. Il Sanco serves as an excellent starting point for exploring eastern Lessinia, a region filled with nature trails and hiking routes suitable for all levels. Nearby, visitors can find ancient hamlets, examples of rural architecture, votive capitals, and wall paintings that reflect the tradition of Lessinia's folk art. Just a few kilometers away is Bolca, a renowned paleontological site known for housing one of the world's most significant fossil deposits and home to the Fossil Museum. A short walk from the property leads to the square of San Bartolomeo delle Montagne, where there are bars, restaurants, and services.
