Area Mid-Centre

Just around the corner, you will find the charming Porta Solestà Bridge. Among the bridges to visit and cross in Ascoli Piceno, the Augustan bridge of Porta Solestà is undoubtedly a must-see for those staying in the city of the 100 Towers. Among the bridges built by the Romans throughout their Empire, this one in Porta Solestà in Ascoli Piceno is one of the most fascinating and best-preserved. It was commissioned by Emperor Augustus and made of travertine, a precious material. The large stone blocks were neatly arranged, interlocking with each other, so that the point of union between them rests on the underlying block. This structure was built "dry," without the use of cement mortar. The single large arch has a span of over 22 meters, a testament to the great Roman engineering skill. Restoration and consolidation work was carried out in the years 1929-30 and 1937-38. During these works, the bridge was emptied of all the filling material used to support the Roman road, such as earth, river stones, and construction debris, and the cracks were repaired. Inside, a reinforced concrete walkway was built to support the structure and dampen the vibrations of vehicular traffic. It is important to remember that the bridge has been continuously used over the centuries, from the Roman era, through the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, up to the present day. - Just a few steps from here is the 16th-century public washhouse, fed by waters that miraculously spring (according to legend) from Sant'Emidio to baptize the Christians of Ascoli. Right on the spot where, according to tradition, Sant'Emidio was beheaded, stands the small temple of San Emidio Rosso, and under the altar, the decapitation stone is still preserved.
