As we were saying, a dozen rooms, not more. But they are made really well! They are nothing luxurious, we don’t have waiters in uniforms o whirlpool bath, but the wooden steps that leads you to the rooms is fantastic and reminds a lot of the time past, the beds are comfortable, space is abundant and bathrooms are elegant in typical Tuscan style but modern and very very clean. Some rooms are for one day travellers and some are more comfortable for those who remain longer. You can call us to say if you want to come with children, motorcycles, cars and many places to see or just pass by and ask for a room where to sleep. We are here for all of this. Each room has a large and comfortable bed, fresh linen (we do the room cleaning every day with attention!), a desk with a couple of chairs where to sit down or to leave your books and maps. All bathrooms have faboulous showers. The furniture is sober but we kept the Tuscan tradition in furniture and details. We installed a very modern system of climatization, to make your room warm in winter and fresh in summertime. You can use it at your wish, it’s simple and efficient. In every room there is a TV, even if we wish you don’t use it too much: our landscape is far much better!

Our breakfasts are truly unforgettable (it’s quite easy to find a local friend eating croutons with lardo and beans at 10 a.m. with a glass of red wine!) and at lunch we offer many local fantastic dishes: bruschette, croutons of any kind, cured meat, cheese and varous vegetables, so that you can use all of your gastronomical fantasy to prepare panini of any measure and type.
Sometimes we prepare light stuff, like mozzarella and tomatoes or panzanella salad (our traditional Tuscan salad with bread!), cold farro soup; sometimes (actually very often!) we prepare the best dishes of our tradition: pappardelle with wildboar or wildrabbit sauce, pici with mushrooms or truffle, various soups and risotti, i pici all’aglione, trippa, ossobuco, ribollita, pappa al pomodoro, peposo.
We are only open for breakfast and lunch! However, we will be happy to recommend some special places for your dinner.

Everything started with Quinto. Now, this name is not a common name down here, since everybody here in Siena knows Quinto. Why? Well, you could ask the hundreds of hungry students that in the ’50s found in him a generous, nice and fantastic host that provided them with such huge, rich, faboulous sandwiches that his first small restaurant had lines of youngsters out of the door waiting. Quinto fed many stomachs and brains for generations. After the famous sandwiches, he opened a “trattoria”, one of the most famous all over the county. Try to search “Da Quinto al Ceppo” on national and international travel guides and you will notice that all of them, italians, germans, british, french wrote down which good food you could get at Quinto with very few money. Rich dishes, high quality, honest prices. A dream? No, our life.
Time goes by and children and grandsons are born. We still all live together and we all work here. We noticed that many guests arrive tired, they eat but they would like to rest before leaving. We are located very close to the Francigena road. Ancient inns offered food and a bed. Well, let’s do it! No big hotel like many others, no farmhouse (we are not farmers!), only a dozen sober rooms, clean and warm to let the people rest if they want. Each crossing gives the chance to reach many places. The sun burns, a delicate breeze coils the hills, the fields are red with the earth of Siena. We think it’s a good idea. The hydraulic comes for breakfast, the doctor for a crouton, the foreigner for a dish of pappardelle with wildboar sauce, a group of friends for croutons and wine. They come and go, they come and go. This road sees all of this since a millenium. And its spirit remained the same.
Il Ceppo is right on the Cassia road, between Monteriggioni and Siena. This gives the advantage of being surrounded by an incredible nature, like the Sienese Montagnola and Pian del Lago. For thir reason, it’s also the ideal place for leaving to mountain bike trips or horseback riding tours. Did you know that the territory of Monteriggioni is crossed since the ninth century a.d. From the ancient Via Francigena, road of merchants and pilgrims from Canterbury to Rome and Jerusalem? For this reason these places are full of castles and churches, abbeys and farmhouses. If you decide to stay, we will give you some suggestions on where to go and what to see, some ideas not written on the guides, places known only by us.
