The story of how Baiocco became the name of the Distefano/Cafiso family, who still reside in Ragusa Ibla today, dates back to the 16th century. During that time, a young apprentice named Francesco fell in love with Giorgia, the third child of a noble family. No one would have ever thought that the two young lovers would be able to fulfill their love story. Francesco, in fact, had to prove that he possessed at least 10,000 baiocchi, the typical Sicilian coins of the 1500s, in order to ask for his beloved's hand in marriage.
However, the young man did not let himself be discouraged and decided to build "Tuppetti," spinning tops, which he sold for the price of 1 baiocco each. In no time, the news spread to the surrounding villages of a young man who was raising funds by selling "Tuppetti" to challenge the power of the local aristocracy, which had reduced much of the population to absolute poverty.
This young man became known as "Il Baiocco." In reality, Francesco, renamed by everyone as "U Baiocco," only wanted to fulfill his love dream. To avoid any political problems, Giorgia's father granted her hand to Baiocco, thus allowing the young man to finally fulfill his dream. Since then, all the descendants of Francesco and Giorgia are called the Baiocchi.
