Area city center

Syracuse, an ancient rival of Athens, is a city steeped in history and culture. Plato visited it three times, hoping to establish his ideal Republic there. Greek mythology is embodied in the story of Arethusa, the nymph transformed into a spring by Artemis, whose temple now forms part of the Cathedral. St. Paul stayed in Syracuse, and Saint Lucia, a revered Italian saint, was born and died here, celebrated by Caravaggio. Archimedes, the great inventor, was born and laid to rest in Syracuse, which boasts one of the most significant archaeological complexes in the world, featuring the Theater, the Amphitheater, and the Altar of Hieron. The city also offers stunning seas, excellent cuisine, and a mild climate year-round. Ortigia, the oldest part of Syracuse, is an island linked to the mainland by two bridges. With around 4,000 inhabitants, Ortigia is abundant in temples, churches, palaces, and fountains. The waterfront, bustling with restaurants and bars, is home to the Temple of Apollo and the Fountain of Diana, symbols of the Arethusa myth. The Cathedral, with its remarkable Baroque facade and Norman interiors, stands on the site of an ancient Doric temple. Nearby, the Church of Santa Lucia alla Badia houses the last canvas painted by Caravaggio. The Archaeological Park of Neapolis features the Greek Theater, the Roman Amphitheater, and the Ear of Dionysius, an extraordinary historical site. Castello Maniace, built by Frederick II, overlooks the beautiful Alfeo waterfront. The Catacombs of San Giovanni, with the Crypt of San Marciano, and the Paolo Orsi Archaeological Museum, showcasing its treasures, are must-see attractions. In Ortigia, the Museum of Palazzo Bellomo preserves Syracuse's artworks, including the Annunciation by Antonello da Messina. Syracusan cuisine presents a variety of seafood and meat dishes, ranging from fish ravioli to lollies in pork sauce. Traditional desserts include the Sicilian cassata and cuccìa. Among the wines, the 24 DOP of Syracuse stand out. The beaches of Syracuse are perfect for a swim in the crystal-clear waters, with Fontane Bianche and the Vendicari reserve being among the most beautiful. The surrounding areas offer the picturesque village of Marzamemi and the Baroque art of Noto, ideal for enhancing your visit.
