Cossogno, at the entrance of the San Bernardino valley, is one step away from the town of Verbania, but it is wholly immersed in nature and in the history of the rural mountain civilization. The hamlet of Cicogna, with its 21 inhabitants, is the “small capital” and houses the registered office of the Park. The other hamlet, Ungiasca, is a suggestive natural balcony on the valley bottom of Verbania and on the Lake Maggiore.
The first hydroelectric power plant was built in 1892 in Cossogno for alternating current: the electric energy produced illuminated the streets of Intra and Pallanza, a few months before the lighting of the streets of Rome.
