The Teatro Povero di Monticchiello is a social and cultural initiative that emerged in the 1960s as a response to the significant changes affecting the village and the Val d’Orcia region. During a time marked by the decline of the sharecropping system, the community turned to theater as a means of resistance and experimentation, creating a unique experience that continues to evolve today.
At the heart of this initiative is “autodrama,” an innovative theatrical form that was developed here for the first time. Today, Teatro Povero operates as a Community Cooperative, engaging in activities that extend beyond theater and culture to provide various services for both the village and its visitors.
The Cooperative manages multifunctional spaces such as the Granary, the tourist office, the newsstand, the museum, and the internet center. In addition, it operates two restaurants, bicycle repair shops, lodging, tourism packages, and activities for asylum seekers. Furthermore, it offers basic healthcare support services, a library, a refreshment point, and collaborates in managing the Museum of Traditional Tuscan Popular Theater, organizing events and workshops. This model of an active community continues to evolve, keeping the connection between theater, the local area, and social commitment alive.
