Capoliveri is the newest municipality on the Island of Elba, although its origins date back to Roman times. Positioned strategically at an elevation of 167 meters above sea level, on a terrace of Monte Calamita, it provides unparalleled views of the seas to the south and west. The Etruscan presence is evidenced by the economic significance of the iron mines that defined the area. During the Roman era, Elba was already known as “Insula inexhaustis Calibum metallis” and was also recognized for its production of fine wines, a detail reflected in its name. Indeed, Capoliveri comes from Caput Liberi, paying tribute to Bacchus (also known as Liber), the Roman god of wine. This winemaking tradition, rich in vineyards and high-quality wines, continues to thrive today and is celebrated during the traditional Grape Festival.
