For those arriving at Central Station and perhaps have some time to spare, we recommend taking a detour to the "Mercato Centrale, " located to the left of the station (to the right when exiting and facing away from the station). It's usually not immediately noticeable because when you exit, you tend to cross Piazza Duca D'Aosta or head towards the bus stop, but if you head right before leaving, towards Piazza Quattro Novembre, at the beginning of Via Sammartini, you'll find this culinary gem.
The Mercato Centrale di Milano is located within the structure of Central Station and is a space that showcases some of Italy's gastronomic excellences.
We also recommend it to tourists arriving from abroad who may not have much time to travel around Italy; it's a way to have a concentrated tour within a few meters.
Similar to other "Central Markets" found in various Italian cities, the Mercato Centrale di Milano offers a youthful and lively atmosphere. With colorful lights, graffiti, and walls with a distressed effect, the environment is designed to create a dynamic and captivating experience for visitors. The market allows customers to choose from a variety of foods from different stalls and enjoy them comfortably at the available tables. However, the only service available at the tables is beverages, which are served by the market's staff. This approach allows visitors to focus on the food while enjoying courteous service. In addition to the wide selection of food and drinks, the Mercato Centrale also offers a unique social experience, with often shared tables that encourage encounters and socialization among customers. In short, the Mercato Centrale di Milano represents a modern and dynamic interpretation of traditional Italian food markets, offering a wide selection of foods in an informal and sociable environment.
The only decorative notes are the portraits of the participating chefs, writings, and drawings related to food, all in a street art style. Inside the market, you'll find about thirty stalls, along with a bar, a full-fledged restaurant, and a multifunctional space, hosting cooking classes and various events. Not all stalls exclusively offer ready-made dishes; in some of them, you can also purchase ingredients such as fish and meat to prepare later.
