The history of San Giorgio a Cremano dates back to Roman times when it emerged as a settlement. The name itself, San Giorgio a Cremano, originates from a legend according to which the villagers built a chapel dedicated to St. George, seeking protection from Vesuvius' eruptions. However, in 1631, the historic center of San Giorgio a Cremano was completely destroyed by a devastating volcanic explosion. This city has always been renowned for its healthiness and, during the Bourbon era, it attracted many noble Neapolitan families who, in the 18th century, chose it as a holiday destination, constructing numerous magnificent Vesuvian villas. San Giorgio a Cremano is also the birthplace of the famous actor, director, and screenwriter Massimo Troisi.
