Borgo Castello Panicaglia boasts an extraordinary history. This medieval village, developed around a small church, surrounds the castle, which has been owned by the Mancini family for centuries. When Pope Pius IX had to flee from Rome, the Mancinis offered refuge to one of his cardinals within the secure walls of the castle. Upon the discovery of the hideout by a spy, the Mancinis helped the cardinal escape, but were arrested by Garibaldi's men.
The men of the family were imprisoned in the castle of Spoleto, awaiting execution. However, the women of the family appealed to Anita Garibaldi for mercy, and their plea was granted, resulting in the release of the men. In gratitude, the Pope bestowed upon them the title of "Knights of the Pontifical State," still visible today in the family crest on the southwest facade of the castle.
