Viterbo is an ancient town situated in upper Lazio, approximately 80 km away from Rome. With a population of 60,000 residents, this city is famous for the annual transportation of the Santa Rosa Machine. This traditional and impressive event occurs every year on the night of September 3rd, in tribute to the patron saint. The illuminated structure, towering 30 meters high and weighing 52 quintals, is carried on the shoulders of one hundred individuals known as the Santa Rosa Bearers. They proudly parade through the dimly lit streets of the city. In 2013, UNESCO acknowledged the Santa Rosa Machine as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity.
