Located almost in the center of the triangle formed by Porta Maggiore, largo Preneste, and piazza della Marranella, the Pigneto is an urban area in the fifth municipality of Rome. Its main street, via del Pigneto, is bustling with bars, pubs, and literary cafes. This neighborhood is relatively young: it only began to develop as a proper residential settlement after 1870. Despite its young age, the Pigneto has a rich history: during World War II, it suffered heavy bombings by the Allies in 1943 and 1944. After the war, thanks to its predominantly working-class population, the Pigneto was chosen as a setting for many Italian Neorealism films. Films such as "Bellissima" by Luchino Visconti, "A Difficult Life" by Dino Risi, and "Accattone" by Pier Paolo Pasolini were filmed right on the streets of the Pigneto. In particular, the iconic scene from Roberto Rossellini's "Rome, Open City," where Pina, played by Anna Magnani, is executed by the Nazis, was filmed on via Raimondo Montecuccoli. But it's not just the cinema that makes the Pigneto famous: it's also the home of the legendary accountant Fantozzi, the protagonist of Luciano Salce's films portrayed by Paolo Villaggio, who lives here with his wife Pina and their daughter Mariangela! In total, fifteen films have been shot in this small triangle between the Labicano-Prenestino and Tiburtino neighborhoods.
