The origins of this place date back to the time of the Carolingians, when the village was part of the possessions of Countess Matilda of Tuscany. It was one of the oldest territories of the Ubaldini, but later the lords of the village were the Samaritans with Landolfo (1043) and Aldolo (1101), who gave their name to the locality. In 1166, the ownership of the territory passed to Martino de Plancaldolo and subsequently to Monaldo. In 1187, the village became a jurisdiction of the Bishop of Cervia, thanks to the papal bull of Pope Innocent IV in 1244.
Piancaldoli is surrounded by woods and chestnut groves, offering an enchanting natural setting. The village is located on the borders of the Province of Florence and is crossed by a provincial road that starts from the Passo della Raticosa and continues towards the Sasso di San Zanobi, reaching Piancaldoli and Giugnola before continuing towards Romagna. On the other hand, the provincial road of San Zanobi runs through the Diaterna valley, connecting Piancaldoli to Firenzuola and passing through the characteristic hamlets of Visignano, Castelvecchio, Caburaccia, and Bordignano.
