Area

Terni, also known as Interamna Nahars in Latin, is the capital of the province of the same name in Umbria. It is internationally famous as the "city of love" because its patron saint, Saint Valentine, was born there and became a bishop. His remains are still preserved in the basilica that bears his name. Terni is also recognized as the "steel city" or the "Italian Manchester" because, since the 19th century, it has played a significant role in the economy of Umbria and Italy, thanks to its steelworks. In addition to Lake Piediluco, the main tourist attraction in the Terni area is the Marmore Falls. This regulated waterfall is one of the highest in Europe and its waters are used to generate electricity. A legend tells that a nymph named Nera fell in love with a handsome shepherd named Velino. However, Juno, jealous of their love, transformed the nymph into a river, which took the name Nera. To not lose his beloved, Velino threw himself off the Marmore cliff. This eternal leap is now reflected in the Marmore Falls.
